AnimEigo to Release Nobody’s Boy Remi Blu-ray in HD and 3-D Under New Imprint

Anime distributor AnimEigo, in partnership with parent company MediaOCD, has announced the upcoming Blu-ray release of Nobody’s Boy Remi, a 51-episode anime series making its high-definition home media debut on May 11. The release marks the inaugural title under AnimEigo’s newly launched Ruined Childhood imprint, which aims to spotlight darker, emotionally complex depictions of youth.

Originally aired in 1977 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Japan’s Nippon TV, Nobody’s Boy Remi is notable as the first and only anime television series broadcast in stereoscopic 3-D. The series was directed by Osamu Dezaki, known for his work on Tomorrow’s Joe and Dear Brother, and produced by TMS Entertainment. It adapts Hector Malot’s 19th-century French novel Sans Famille. AnimEigo describes the story:

Remi was once a happy little boy, living with his mom and pet cow in the French countryside. But that joyous childhood comes to a screeching halt when daddy comes home, tells him he’s adopted, and sells him to a street performer. Suddenly forced to accompany the gruff Vitalis, his dogs and his monkey as they wander on foot all over the country, Remi thinks that life can’t possibly get worse. But he is VERY wrong.

The Blu-ray edition presents the full series in 1080p HD with both 2-D and 3-D viewing options. The 3-D presentation uses the Pulfrich Effect (a technique relying on horizontal movement and depth perception manipulated through simple visual processing delay), to simulate three-dimensional visuals without requiring specialized hardware. Each set includes a compatible pair of 3-D glasses, with additional units available for purchase.

In addition to the original Japanese audio, the release includes a complete French dub and English subtitles, as well as a newly produced U.S. trailer. All 51 episodes are distributed across four dual-layer discs, encoded in AVC at 17 Mbps, and offered region-free.
